Developers leave, agencies close and in-house teams change. The website stays. Handing it to a new team is routine if it is done in the right order.
Start with access
Before anything else, gather the logins: the domain registrar, the hosting account, the website admin and any connected services such as email or payment providers.
If some are missing, a good team will help you recover them. This is the step that most often causes delays.
An audit before any changes
We read the code, map how the site is put together and take a full backup. Nothing is changed until we understand what is there. This is where backend knowledge matters: the visible pages are only a small part of how a website works.
Write it down
Many inherited websites have no documentation. We record how the site is structured, what each plugin is for and where the risky parts are. That record belongs to you.
Fix first, improve second
Urgent problems come first: security holes, broken forms, failing backups. Improvements follow once the site is stable. You should not have to rebuild a working website just because the people changed.
